Horst Kächele war ärztlicher Direktor der Universitätsklinik Psychosomatische Medizin und Psychotherapie Ulm von 1990 bis 2009 und Leiter der Forschungsstelle für Psychotherapie Stuttgart von 1988 bis 2004. Danach lehrte er an der International Psychoanalytik University Berlin. Seine Arbeitsfelder waren die psychoanalytische Verlaufs- und Ergebnisforschung und die Klinische Bindungsforschung.
