Abstract:
Trauma bonding represents a major challenge for affected individuals and support systems alike and has thus far been insufficiently addressed in both research and clinical care. The term describes an intense emotional attachment to a violent or abusive person that develops under conditions of violence, coercion, control, and restricted autonomy. This article synthesizes key approaches in the literature and focuses particularly on the concept of trauma-coerced attachment (TCA). TCA refers to a non-reciprocal attachment dynamic actively produced by perpetrators, in which coercion, dependency, and a progressive distortion of the victim’s sense of self and worldview become intertwined. The article conceptualizes trauma bonding dimensionally, outlines central mechanisms underlying its development, and discusses diagnostic points of reference, differential diagnostic challenges, and therapeutic implications. Finally, a preliminary model of interacting networks of violence, trauma bonding, and everyday functioning is presented.
