Abstract:
The initial phase of an analytical group is presented through selected dreams of the participants and the conductor. While the participants’ dreams were used for communication within the group, the conductor’s dreams were only known to himself. Their consideration and interpretation serve to better understand the process. In intervision, particular attention is paid to conclusions about the state of mind of the group. The narrative is supplemented by a qualitative content analysis and categorisation of dream quality via team rating. Initially, the conductor’s dreams can be interpreted as an expression of concerns regarding the group’s activities. However, they can also be seen as a sign of openness to problematic content. Later, the dreams of the conductor before the sessions also indicate increased confidence in dealing with the group and its participants. Conductor dreams after the session can throughout be described as a stabilising counterpoint. This project demonstrates that conductor dreams can provide a valuable insight into unconscious communication in analytical groups.
