Der Beitrag weist auf eine Verbindung von Theorieentwicklung und Wissenschaftspolitik der Psychoanalyse seit Beginn ihrer Institutionalisierung. Freuds Streben, seine Lehre in einem durchaus unfreundlichen Umfeld als anerkannte (Natur)Wissenschaft zu etablieren, führte zunächst zu Vereinheitlichungstendenzen und Kritikintoleranz innerhalb der IPA, aber mit zunehmender geografischer und inhaltlicher Expansion doch zu starker theoretischer Diversifizierungund dies angesichts des nie geklärten Wissenschaftsstatus der Psychoanalyse und dem institutionshistorischen Erbe unzureichender Diskussionskultur. Die Autorin versteht die Psychoanalyse als kritische Sozialbzw. Kulturwissenschaft und verhandelt ihre Kritik an der behaupteten biologischen Fundierung der Psychoanalyse anhand der Triebund Symbolgenese.

Abstract:
The article points to a connection between the theoretical development and the politics of science in psychoanalysis since the beginning of its institutionalisation. Freud’s striving to establish his Ideas as a recognized (natural) science in a thoroughly unfriendly environment initially led to a strong tendency towards standardisation and intolerance of criticism within the IPA. However increasing geographical and ideological expansion, finally led to strong theoretical diversification, this in view of the never clarified scientific status of psychoanalysis and the historical legacy of an inadequate culture of discussion. The author understands psychoanalysis as a critical social or cultural science and illustrates her critique of the claimed biological foundation on the basis of early development of drives and symbols.
